How does the sleep apnea feature, one of the most striking features of the new Watch Series 10 introduced by Apple, work?
Apple’s recently announced Watch Series 10 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 will come with a sleep apnea feature. This feature will also come to Apple Watch Series 9. So what is sleep apnea and how exactly does this feature work?
Sleep apnea is a disorder in which people sometimes cannot breathe while sleeping, and therefore people cannot get enough oxygen during sleep. Moreover, this condition is not easily detected.
It is estimated that the number of people suffering from sleep apnea in the world is over 1 billion. On the other hand, today, if you want to understand whether you have sleep apnea, you may need to go to the hospital.
How does Apple’s Sleep Apnea detection feature work?
Apple Watch uses an on-device accelerometer instead of a blood oxygen sensor to detect sleep apnea.
This accelerometer also detects wrist movements associated with breathing irregularities that occur during sleep.
When the data collected over 30 days is analyzed, the user is notified if signs of moderate or severe sleep apnea are detected on a regular basis.
Apple’s sleep apnea detection algorithm uses advanced machine learning techniques. In order for the feature to work properly, it uses a large dataset collected from sleep apnea tests.
Apple is currently awaiting approval from the relevant institutions for the use of this algorithm.
Users will be able to collect this breathing irregularity data collected by the Apple Watch through the Apple Health app and share it with health institutions.
